PGNiG sees Gazprom case against EC finished until 2019-end

WARSAW, Mar 7 (PRIME) -- Polish gas operator PGNiG expects its suit against the European Commission (EC) over the commission’s antimonopoly dispute with Russian gas giant Gazprom to be finished until the end of 2019, PGNiG CEO Piotr Wozniak told reporters on Thursday.

“The court cannot take more time than until the end of the year due to procedural reasons,” he said.

The European Commission initiated an antimonopoly investigation against Gazprom in August 2012 and accused it of violating the E.U. competition rules in 2015. According to the authority, Gazprom restricted free supplies to the Eastern E.U. countries by splitting gas markets, preventing diversification of supplies and setting unfair prices.

In May 2018, the European Commission closed an antimonopoly case against Gazprom and obliged the company to ensure a free flow of gas at competitive prices in the Central and Eastern European gas markets but set no fines. PGNiG filed a claim against the decision in October of the year.
